L'Aquila – Good Friday’s procession

During the celebrations of the Holy Week, one of the most important events for the citizens of L'Aquila in occasion of Easter is the procession of the Dead Christ on Good Friday.
The procession of Good Friday in L'Aquila has origins rather back in time. In fact, it is possible to date this celebration at least at the year 1505 and it was stopped for reasons of public order in 1768.
After a long interruption, in 1954, thanks to the effective contribution of the Minorites of the Saint Bernardino monastery, the ancient tradition has been restored in L'Aquila. Hundreds of people in traditional costumes, with simulacri, censers, statues and torchs, make the set spectacular, while a choral group sings the Miserere song, accompanied from an orchestra of arches, giving a dramatic atmosphere to the event.
In year 2000 the Association of the Knights of the Saint Friday has been created by clergymen and laymen, in order to give continuity to the special event that annually attracts a lot of tourists and citizens of L'Aquila, making the procession a solemn moment of devotion and prayer.
